Printhead / Carriage Jam or System Error
The printhead carriage mechanism is obstructed or experiencing mechanical failure preventing normal travel along the guide rail.
Possible Causes
- •Stuck paper shred or foreign object blocking the carriage path
- •Stiff or dry carriage bar lubricant
- •Encoder strip is smudged with ink or slipped off its sensor
- •Cartridge latches not fully seated
How to Fix
- Turn the printer off using the power button, then disconnect power cord from the wall.
- Open the cartridge access door and manually check if the carriage can slide gently side to side.
- Inspect the far left and right resting bays with a flashlight for tiny scraps of torn paper.
- Gently clean the clear plastic encoder strip with a dry lint-free cloth if ink specks are visible (do not pull hard).
- Re-seat all ink cartridges until they click securely into place.
- Close all doors, reconnect power directly to the wall outlet (no surge protector), and restart.
Printhead Voltage / Thermal Fault
Critical error indicating abnormal voltage or elevated temperature in the printhead nozzles, usually triggering an alternating power/error flash.
Possible Causes
- •Overheated printhead nozzles from printing with empty cartridges
- •Electrical short inside the printhead contact array
- •Power supply unit (PSU) delivering irregular voltage under printhead load
- •Dried ink bridging copper electrical contacts
How to Fix
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord immediately to prevent thermal damage.
- Open the scanner unit/cover. Remove all ink tanks from the printhead.
- Lift the printhead locking lever and remove the printhead unit carefully.
- Inspect the gold electrical contact pads on the back of the printhead. Clean gently with 99% isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free swab and allow to dry completely.
- Reinstall the printhead and lock the lever, but DO NOT install the ink tanks yet.
- Close cover, plug in power, and turn on. If it asks for ink tanks, install them one by one. If B200 appears immediately without ink tanks, the printhead circuitry has failed.
Fatal Mechanism or Sensor Error
A general fatal hardware malfunction occurred, often caused by a paper feed obstruction, carriage lock, or packing tape left inside.
Possible Causes
- •Packing tape or blue shipping foam still inside the printer
- •Foreign object (paperclip, pen, shredded paper) jamming gears
- •Encoder disk or timing belt displacement
- •Paper sensor stuck in tripped position
How to Fix
- Turn off the printer by pressing the power button. If unresponsive, unplug from the wall.
- Open the scanner unit cover and support it.
- Verify that all bright blue protective shipping tapes and cardboard spacers have been removed.
- Look inside the paper path with a bright light for any tiny paper scraps, staples, or foreign debris.
- Close the scanner cover and confirm paper support is loaded correctly with no curled paper.
- Plug power back in and restart.
Paper Jam in Paper Path or Tray 2
Paper did not reach or clear the pre-feed sensor or registration assembly within the required millisecond timeframe.
Possible Causes
- •Paper pick-up rollers are dirty, dusty, or glazed smooth
- •Paper tray guides set too tightly or too loosely
- •Damp, curled, or static-charged paper
- •Sensor flag stuck or broken spring
How to Fix
- Pull out Tray 2 completely and remove all paper from the stack.
- Inspect the rubber pickup roller above the tray. Clean with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
- Flex and fan the paper stack before reloading; ensure stack does not exceed max fill line.
- Adjust paper side and rear length guides until they rest flush against paper without bending it.
- Check rear access door for any accordioned or torn paper sheets and remove them slowly in paper travel direction.
- Reinsert Tray 2 firmly until it clicks.
Waste Ink Absorber Full Error
The internal sponge waste ink pad counter has reached 100% capacity to prevent ink overflowing into the printer casing.
Possible Causes
- •High number of printhead cleaning cycles executed over printer lifetime
- •High total volume of borderless photo prints
- •Internal digital waste count threshold reached
How to Fix
- This is an internal safety lockout. Turn the printer off.
- On newer MegaTank models (e.g. G3270 / GX7020), replace the user-replaceable Maintenance Cartridge (MC-G01/MC-G02).
- On older fixed-pad models, the counter requires entering Service Mode with Canon Service Tool software or physical pad replacement.
- Avoid running further cleaning cycles, as ink can physically seep through bottom housing.
Fuser Error / AC Power Fluctuation
The fuser assembly heating element did not reach operational temperature (approx. 180°C - 200°C) or detected power line voltage drop.
Possible Causes
- •Printer connected to an overloaded power strip, UPS battery backup, or extension cord
- •Blown ceramic heating element or thermistor failure in fuser
- •Low line AC voltage during high household/office load
How to Fix
- Turn the printer power switch off.
- Unplug the printer completely from any surge protector, UPS, or power strip.
- Plug the printer power cord directly into a grounded wall receptacle.
- Allow the printer to remain powered off for at least 15 minutes to let the fuser cool and reset the internal thermal switch.
- Power on the printer and listen for the normal fuser warmup spin.
Laser Unit / Polygon Motor Failure
The laser diode or high-speed polygon rotating mirror motor did not synchronize properly during initialization.
Possible Causes
- •Polygon mirror motor bearing seized or slowed by dust
- •Laser unit ribbon cable disconnected or oxidised
- •Internal condensation from moving printer between temperature zones
How to Fix
- Press and hold the Power button to shut down the printer.
- Unplug AC power cord and wait 20 minutes (allowing any internal condensation to evaporate).
- Open the front toner cover and inspect for loose paper scraps or dropped toner powder.
- Close cover, reconnect AC power, and turn on.
- If the printer makes a high-pitched whine followed by 0A, the polygon motor has failed.
Drum Unit End of Life / Corona Wire Dirty
The OPC drum charge count has exceeded the manufacturer cycle limit, or electrical leakage is detected on the corona wire.
Possible Causes
- •Corona wire dust accumulation
- •Drum unit reached 12,000 to 30,000 page lifespan
- •Toner spill on high voltage charge contacts
How to Fix
- Open the front cover and pull out the drum and toner assembly.
- Locate the green tab on the drum unit.
- Slide the green tab gently back and forth across the wire 5 to 6 times to clean the corona wire.
- Return the green tab to its original home position (marked with an arrow); failure to lock it causes vertical black stripes.
- Reinstall the assembly. If replacing the drum unit, perform the manual drum counter reset: With front cover open, press and hold OK for 2 seconds, then press Up Arrow to confirm reset.
Paper Tray Size / Type Mismatch
The print job requested a specific paper size, weight, or orientation that does not match the loaded tray configuration.
Possible Causes
- •Document set to A4 while tray is configured for US Letter (8.5 x 11)
- •Tray guides not locked in correct position
- •Custom paper size sent without bypass tray selection
How to Fix

- On the printer touchscreen, navigate to Device -> Paper Trays -> Tray 1 -> Edit Size/Type.
- Select "Auto Detect" or manually select "Letter (8.5 x 11 in.)" and "Plain".
- Press "Confirm" to proceed with the pending queue.
Paper Jam / No Paper in Rear Tray
The sheet feeder tried to pick paper but detected that no sheet entered the feed roller or a sheet jammed immediately at entry.
Possible Causes
- •Paper guides clamped too tightly
- •Paper edge curled or wrinkled
- •Small coin, hairpin, or pencil dropped into the open rear feed slot
How to Fix
- Remove all paper from the rear feed slot.
- Look straight down into the paper slot with a flashlight. Remove any small objects with tweezers.
- Straighten and tap paper on a flat surface to align edges.
- Reload 10 to 15 sheets of standard 20lb copy paper and slide the paper guide against the edge.
- Press the Black or Color copy button to resume the print job.
Windows Print Spooler Service Terminated
The Windows RPC print spooler service (spoolsv.exe) crashed or failed to start, making all printers appear unavailable or disappear.
Possible Causes
